Not interested in this. It's not really any more convenient to do this OTA. Just plug your phone in for 10 mins and install it in the evening. I could maybe see this working over Wi-Fi but for a lot of places this would destroy peoples data caps.

Everything has to start some where. I was nearly t-boned by a SUV today that thought they were better than the rest of us... they were running very much running a red light. Get your head out of the sand as to the new world order...

Here in America bigger does not mean better in the end...

I have almost been t-boned by a compact car running a red light so what is the difference? Bad drivers are bad drivers no matter what they are driving. I drive an SUV, however it is a Ford Escape so it weighs about the same as any ordinary mid-sized sedan. I just like sitting higher and having 4WD with some ground clearance because I live in snow country. The fuel economy is about the same as any AWD mid-sized sedan and little high MPG compact cars are worthless here in the Black Hills from about November to April. Let people drive what they want to drive and don't force them into what you think they should drive.

With that said, I purchased my iPad from Walmart and it works exactly the same as anyone who bought theirs at the Apple store. If Radio Shack wants to sell them I say more power to them. I have a feeling all of the iPads will work the same no matter where they are purchased. It is a nice thing that places like Walmart or Radio Shack are allowed to sell them because it makes it easier for us rural folks (and there are millions of us even if you don't want to acknowledge it) to be able to purchase the product.

hope they aren't automatic then people will lose their jailbreaks!

def. won't be automatic as people have bandwidth restrictions with their carrier.

also, i wouldn't even mind this being over wifi.

Let's theorize: So why didn't they use the internal card?

Supposedly because apple said "please, please, pretty please dont"

Edit: Or maybe it was just an offer they couldnt refuse...

Directed a friend to the Great Barrington store in western MA this morning. Store had a total of 6 units. He was the only one there at 9am opening and picked up a black 16gb wifi. Salesperson tried selling extras (including an 1st gen ipad cover, lol) but none were required.

I absolutley like this idea. Imagine college professors being able to produce podcast notes (some type of e-book podcast) and students being able to download them.

I also see it being useful for short things like Cliff Notes, written (typed) podcasts, concert programs, newspaper or magazine subscriptions but not front line books. Although, it could work in concert with Project Gutenberg or UPenn's online book programs. The extra screen real estate would be important.

So, it looks like Apple is trying to fix the problem by keeping the MacBook cooler, thus preventing the heat sink from expanding enough to come into contact with the cable. A simple, elegant solution, except it will likely cause increased fan use and decreased battery life

    Not so elegant then, eh?

First in line with 10 others. 20 minutes before open an employee here in San Diego stepped out and says

"Are any of you in line for the iPad? Because I thought I just wanted to let you know in case you are waiting...", we are ALL WAITING FOR THE iPad.

He continues, "We don't have any physically in stock, but we can take $100 dollars and put you on our usual waiting list.", we all start to walk away.

He goes on, "No Best Buy in San Diego has any in physical stock..., those ads were created before the Japanese earthquake and things kinda got all messed up."

REALLY? You think they could have canceled the ad a month ago.

    BEST BUY ARE BASTARDS!!!!

steve is right, the basic thing is the ipod works well, and it is very simple to use. Itunes helps everything by being a first class program that is always getting frequent updates.

only thing is, apple needs to let record labels/artists come up with variable pricing.

so catalog albums will cost less, and labels can get money from singles.

Apple does not like it when OEM's let things slip. IIRC, ATI lost a contract due to something like this.

AGREED. 100%. WTF have they done?? I think I'm going to overwrite the new control buttons with the old ones.

For gods sake, what a bunch of whiners.

It's a neat sleek user interface and I really like the changes. It looks less cluttered, and more importantly easier to use. Everything has nice clear spacing - and the move away from Aqua which has been with us forever is NOT a bad thing.

Aqua looks a little outdated now, and I like the fact that Apple are experimenting with new design ideas. I hope iTunes is the template that affects the rest of the OS.

Yup, most of the waste is for military technology and planes like the raptor that were built for cold-war style fighting. That era is dead. No offense intended, but that poster clearly has NO IDEA what the US uses its ridiculously large military budget for.

Hey I love the F-22 Raptor.

Even though air-air combat is hardly seen today, it doesn't mean we should abandon fighter jets. I agree that we don't need as many Raptors right now so building up our fleet of them is wasteful. But, we can't be a reactive military in the sense of our equipment. This isn't WWII anymore where a new plane can be developed within a few years. It takes far longer to develop a new fighter jet. So the Raptor is a necessary plane. We just don't need a sizable fleet of them right now.

I am sure someone has a 24" S-IPS panel.LGs doesnt say if it is or not.

It would be nice to see Apple make it 24" though, but if the current panels dont permit them to do it at the same quality, I am fine with it staying the same.

I am basing my "insight" on http://aryarya.net/wassyoi/lcdmemo.html
A very good source for lcd panel specs. There is no 24" IPS panel in use, only PVAs

Thank you, and seriously they are not going to make the jump to Iphone 5 for another generation after this one, that I think is still going to come out on time, with an A5 processor in June. I will be making the move from my 3Gs to the next gen as soon as it comes out. Btw I am not basing my knowledge of a summer Iphone release on the fact that apple has not let me down yet year after year of releasing Iphones early into the summer.

So you are saying that the new iPhone will release without iOS 5?

Because its doubtful iOS 5 will be released with no dev preview prior to release.

Off topic I know, but that iPod release thread is even better than Slashdot's 2001 coverage of the original iPod.

    "$400 for an Mp3 Player!

I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional."

And the award of prescience goes to:

"We live in the YEAR 2001... not 6000 years from now when ridiculously awsome technology will exist. No other mp3 player has a harddrive like this... 5gigs... **** yeah. A rio of the same size offers 64megs. Jesum Crow, get over your moping.. .this is revolutionary.... plus it's just the beggining. This device litterally bests anything on the market by about 100x"

    and to:

"Apple hit a HOME RUN with this thing, and just as always proved that there's no one that can make products like them. Way to go Apple!"

(To which a hilarious response is:)

"Without a future. This Christmas you will see mp3 players be commoditized. Meaning that the players from Korea will be way less expensive tha iPod."

Too funny. That's why I reserve judgement. :)

And who, exactly, are you talking about?

All I've seen are a few anonymous comments on this message board. Who are those people? Are they pros? I don't know who they are. Do you know?

Funny how you've developed a whole theory about "professionals" and yet you haven't proved in any way that any pros said what you claimed they said. I've read that the crowd at the show seemed to really love it.

Looks like you totally misread his post - he didn't say professionals, he said "professionals". Meaning people who claimed to be pros.

And it's funny, yesterday those "pros" were all ranting that tons of features were removed and the rest of the suite killed, now that that has been debunked they're off in hiding.

Because you made a post that claimed our editing skills have nothing to do with creativiy or experience, but simply that 'knowing the software' is the only advangate we have.

Good try, but no. Because you misread his post and assumed something he didn't actually say. I know, sometimes sarcasm can be tricky, but it seemed pretty obvious to me.

There ARE "pros" who get mad because software gets cheaper and easier to use. If they are truly talented they should have nothing to worry about, but I'm sure there are guys out there who aren't especially great editors who are getting work because they could afford the cost of entry.
